How to read this timeline
The conflict cannot be understood as one continuous advance from Poland to Berlin. Decisions made in Europe, North Africa, the Atlantic, and the Pacific changed the resources and choices available on every other front. Reading the milestones together makes it easier to see when a regional crisis became a global war and why several apparent victories produced new strategic problems.
This selection focuses on turning points rather than attempting to list every campaign or civilian experience. It places military events beside diplomatic decisions so that chronology does not become a catalogue of battles. The dates provide an overview for comparison; detailed research should also examine occupation, resistance, genocide, colonial troops, logistics, and the different national memories of the war.
Visualization method
The interactive version uses periods for long campaigns, individual events for decisive moments, and links to show consequences across fronts. Zooming from years to months reveals how Pearl Harbor, Midway, Stalingrad, and D-Day belong to connected but distinct sequences.
